In pursuit of its Sustainable Agriculture Initiative, Nestlé Nigeria is involved in on-the-farm adaptive research with the University of Agriculture, Abeokuta, UNAAB to boost soyabean cultivation.
The collaborative research effort has brought about a selection of soyabean varieties with improved seed colour, size and yield through sustainable farming techniques.
In support of the soyabean popularization project, the company also donated five threshing machines to local farmers in South-Western Region of Nigeria to reduce drudgery in harvesting and packaging of soyabeans. In addition to threshing soyabeans, the machine can be used for shelling of maize (with or without the husk) cowpeas, sorghum and millet.
Nestlé also organizes workshops on soyabeans for local farmers in collaboration with UNAAB. The workshop examines: soybean production and agronomic practices, outdoor practical demonstration on soybean planting, seed source, site-selection, land preparation and planting practices, seed rate requirement for optimum plant optimization, spacing, weed and pest control, threshing, post-harvest handling and market outlets.
About 40 hectares have been planted with the improved soyabean varieties. Nestlé buys the soyabean from local farmers at competitive prices to further alleviate poverty in the rural communities and create employment.
