In Lampung, deforestation has been so rampant, including at Youth Camp Forest, Taman Hutan Raya (Great Forest) Wan Abdul Rahman. The forest in this area is now being rehabilitated for water conservation under the Nestlé Green Initiative, an environmental project that also aims to improve local people’s welfare.
The objective is to rehabilitate 30 hectare area, to establish an area for collection of endangered forest trees species native to Indonesia and to help improve local people’s welfare in the surrounding communities by offering income generating activities.
This is a five-year program (2005 – 2010) which involved Faculty of Forestry Bogor Agriculture University, University of Lampung and The Lampung Forestry Agency.
Numbers of people impacted :
- Sixty (62) households in the surrounding area.
- Twelve groups (appr. 60 people) of catfish farmers and seven group (appr.35 people) of oyster mushroom farmers (note: these two groups are part of 62 household mentioned above)
- Visitors, 5000 – 7000 people / year
