Young man learningThe ADP is a unique contribution by Nestle to Indonesia’s technical education. The original idea stemmed from Nestlé Indonesia’s concern about the lack of trained workers in the field of industrial engineering, such as mechanics, electricians and maintenance specialists.
The ADP was originally implemented at the Waru plant in East Java, and now the activity has shifted to the Kejayaan plant, also in East Java. A couple of hundred applicants sit a very competitive test every year, but only eight apprentices are admitted to the program. The ADP is regarded as attractive by STM (Technical Vocational School) graduates from the neighbouring towns as apprentices receive full scholarships, as well as the fact that the program is sponsored by Nestle.
The program consists of two phases, each of which strongly emphasize practical knowledge and skills. In the first phase, the apprentices spend eight months in the Nestlé Apprenticeship Centre during which time they develop the necessary theoretical background, and undertake substantial amounts of practical exercises.
While the centre is located at a Nestlé plant, the plant has nevertheless not been turned into an apprenticeship centre. The purpose of locating the centre at the plant is to expose the apprentices to a real working environment so as to close the gap between the school world and the industrial world.
In the second phase, the apprentices are sent to study for seven months at one of the two designated schools, one in Solo, Central Java and another in Malang, East Java. Both are top-notch technical schools as they follow a Swiss and German system of technical education.  As of today, the ADP has graduated more than 40 technicians, half of whom work in Nestlé factories. The others are employed by other Indonesian companies. Thus the program does not only benefit Nestlé but also the Indonesian manufacturing sector in general.
