On December 26th 2004, the world’s strongest earthquake in 40 years shook the region, with its epicentre under the sea in the northernmost tip of the Indonesian archipelago. The resultant tsunami wreaked havoc around the Bay of Bengal, killing over 39,000 people and displacing over a million in Sri Lanka.
Nestle Lanka mobilized its resources during the Tsunami aftermath period by providing cooked MAGGI meals, food packs and RTD for numerous refuge camps in the affected areas. Clean drinking water was also provided immediately to many affected areas, tranported by our milk tankers.
Nestle Lanka staff contributed part of their January salary to purchase much needed medicine and our January advertising spend was given to our Tsunami relief efforts.
Currently we are completing a fishing harbour, an anchorage and work on 2 more anchorages have started. This is expected to encourage the badly affected fishing communities to recommence their livelihood. Our target is to commence the construction of 10 more over the next few months.
Nestle Lanka is also extending their assistance to construct modern pre-schools as many schools were destroyed along the coastal belt. The work has started on three and target is to complete10 pre-schools.
