In 2000, Nestlé Portugal launched a Nutrition Program, named “Nestlé Apetece-me” (“I fancy it”).
Educational Communication for children (10-12 yrs) was the aim of this Nutrition Program. Pedagogical communication simultaneously ensures the achievement of several objectives. An early in-depth and long term involvement of children - the main target- the goodwill of parents and teachers who perceive Nestlé as a company which helps them in their educational objectives, as well as other community forces who, once again, discover Nestlé as a socially responsible company.
This ambitious project was implemented in 67 pilot schools with close cooperation from the Ministry of Education and its effective endorsement came in the first year of implementation (2000/2001). For this school year, the number of schools involved was 600.
This program included the development of educational material on the themes of Food and Nutrition, worked out in a multidisciplinary approach as well as stimulating teamwork. This set of materials includes the first Nutrition Manual published in Portugal and prepared in cooperation with “Sociedade Portuguesa de Ciências da Nutrição e Alimentação” – a Portuguese Professional Association for Nutritionists.
Since 2000, the Nutrition Program “Nestlé Apetece-me” has supported 30.000 teachers and 200.000 students aged 10-12. From 2004 onwards an additional 7.500 teachers and 100.000 students aged 6-10 will be involved in the program.
This year (2004-2005) the schools were also invited to participate in a contest that puts their knowledge of Nutrition to the test. They have to make up the lyrics for a composed melody and the idea is that they can sing about the benefits of a healthy diet and physical exercise.
