The goal of the Kejayan Biogas Project is to reduce the negative impact of dairy farming activities on the environment - particularly on water - and to allow energy savings at farmer (household) level.
There are approx. 30,000 dairy farmers in East Java milk district supplying milk to Kejayan Factory through 29 Dairy Cooperatives. The project targets these Cooperatives through the Milk Procurement & Dairy Development Department and has resulted in improved dairy farming waste management. This has led to reduction in the pollution of water sources and to an increase in available organic matter for crop fertilisation. The thus resulting renewable energy (methane gas) available to dairy farmers, translated into energy cost reduction for households.
Among its activities in this project, Nestlé has created a revolving fund, which is allocated to Dairy Cooperatives supplying to Kejayan Factory. The revolving fund is repayable in a one-year period and free of interest. The initial fund was created for 50 small units and 10 larger units, while possible extensions of this fund may occur in the future.
This project has proven how feasible the set up of small biogas units at farmer level was, with the commissioning of over 55 units within the area of East Java.
