Primary Education in Indonesia

Sponsorship of Local Schools

In 2003, Nestlé began its partnership with the Indonesian non-profit organisation Yayasan Nurani Dunia (YND) in an effort to help improve the quality of education in the area around the Kejayan factory.

The project was initiated following concern that many of the buildings and other facilities in a number of schools near the plant were in very poor condition. Some of the walls were cracked, while some appeared almost ready to collapse. If those deficiencies were not addressed, they would inevitably jeopardise local students' education and lives.

Tanggulangin State Elementary School

As a result, renovation was undertaken of the Tanggulangin State Elementary School. Classrooms, the library, the headmaster's and teachers' rooms, storage room, canteen, restrooms, foyer and schoolyard were renovated. Aside of these, Nestlé also sponsored the provision of books and other facilities to support the children in their studies. Ultimately, the school was also used as a learning centre for the entire Kejayan community.

Other schools neighbouring Kejayan factory

Furthermore, Nestlé's Kejayan factory also donated books, writing boards and educational toys to other schools in the area around the plant. These include two kindergartens, four Islamic elementary schools (ibtidaiyah), the Kejayan Junior High School, and a traditional Islamic boarding school (pesantren).

Additional projects

Additionally, the Panjang factory also helped improve the libraries of its neighbouring local schools by furnishing them with textbooks and reading books and by financing provision of construction materials to be used for school renovations.

With the assistance of the YND, Nestle Indonesia will work hand-in-hand with community and other stakeholders in a bid to create a strong sense of ownership for the programme within the community. The aim is to lead the community to maintain the facilities independently, thus ensuring long-term sustainability of the programme.

Availing of the improved infrastructure, YND conducted various training activities in a bid to raise the quality of education and develop human resources in the area surrounding the Nestlé plant.

In partnership with the YND, Nestlé additionally renovated and build libraries in the Raudatul Ulum Islamic boarding school (Pesantren), and the Miftahul Huda Islamic school (Madrasah), in order to ensure active involvement in the community.
